The number question on a lot of people’s minds that are new to CBD would be,  “will it make me high”? This question feels more concerning when they learn that CBD comes from cannabis plants. So, Can CBD cause a ‘high’? What is the psychoactive nature of CBD? We are here to answer all your questions and put your worries at rest.

What is getting high?

How does ‘getting high’ work?

Why doesn’t CBD create the ‘high’?

What about overdosing? Is CBD legal?

Takeaway

Learning that CBD comes from the Cannabis plant can be a bit concerning to new users of CBD products. The majority of people confuse CBD with THC. THC is another component of the cannabis plant famous for its psychoactive properties. The good news is, CBD alone will not cause a high. Even though CBD is derived from cannabis plants, it does not have any psychoactive properties. CBD you get in the form of tinctures or infused in products at the market contains trace amounts of THC that are not potent enough to sauce any feeling of high. If anything, CBD does the opposite. It blocks the ‘high’. What’s more? CBD can be easily derived from the hemp plant instead of marijuana. The hemp plant does not contain any psychoactive components either. To understand better, we need to understand what is considered ‘high’, and how it works.

What is getting high

Science suggests that getting a ‘high’ is the process of altering one’s consciousness or perspective. In other words, it’s a different state of mind, when the person is awake and conscious but does not have full control, or in some cases proper understanding. Getting high means that you experience emotions and feelings differently from your environment or interaction with others than you normally would. People feel changes in their sensory perception and their emotions are heightened. They might not be able to recognize day to day objects or familiar faces while high.

It is a state when people are conscious and active, but certain feelings like euphoria, laughter, happiness in general, and other positive emotions are peaked.

How does ‘getting high’ work?

Our brain communicates with our body via ‘neurotransmitters’. In semi-scientific terms, it is the signal that travels from our body to our brain that tells our brain what is happening, what are we touching, what are we holding, and what you are reading right now. These signals enter the processing unit of our brain through a part called ‘neuroreceptors’. So, our body sends signals, the signals enter our brain via neuroreceptors and our brain understands things.

But there’s a way to hijack the process. After entering our body, the psychoactive compounds are absorbed by our blood. Through the blood, these molecules can enter any tissue in the body, including your brain. Once they pass the blood-brain barrier they are able to alter neural chemistry. These chemicals, such as THC, intercept the endocannabinoid system and interact with its receptors. The Endocannabinoid system is a very important modulatory system in the brain. It controls the release of almost all neurotransmitters from the brain. They start messing with the signals sent through neuroreceptors and interact with them directly. THC floods the system with neurotransmitters, sending signals that did not originate from the brain or endocannabinoid system.  The processing part takes the input and works accordingly, without knowing that the signal came from a different source. This alters the normal flow of signals among the neurons. Hence the creation of the altered state of mind, or the ‘high’.

Why doesn’t CBD create the ‘high’

CBD and THC both are a type of cannabinoids produced by cannabis. They enter the body and interact with the CB1 receptors or cannabinoid type 1 receptors. The reason why CBD doesn’t create a high, while THC does, lies in the way they react with these receptors and the impact they create. THC stimulates the CB1 receptors and activates them. In other words, it hits them hard, making them generate certain signals, usually of the positive end of the emotional spectrum that we experience as the seemingly inane burst of happiness, or laughter.

The usual indicators of being high are:

  • Euphoria
  • Increased relaxation
  • Dry mouth
  • Changed perception of reality
  • Impaired memory
  • Red eyes
  • Increased appetite

CBD, on the other hand, also interacts with the CB1 receptors but acts as an antagonist, rather than stimulating them. Effectively, this almost cuts off the receptors from receiving the original signal sent from our body. It blocks all the intoxicating signals coming off from these receptors. And since CBD does not stimulate CB1 receptors, we do not feel anything because of CBD.

So, in short, CBD binds with the neuroreceptors, preventing the CB1 receptors from receiving the signals of physical and mental pain/suffering, without creating its own ‘false’ happiness. The mental peace that CBD brings is actually the lack of pain/anxiety/stress that we would otherwise have.

Is the relaxing and calming effect of CBD some type of high?

CBD is taken by many people to fight anxiety disorders and other panic disorders for its calming and relaxing effects. What it does is interact with the endocannabinoid system. It happens in such a way that modifies the activity of enzymes that catalyze endocannabinoids produced naturally by your body. It prolongs their availability hence using the natural effects of ECS. It is not the same as sledgehammering the system to produce false happy signals, which happens when a psychotropic compound like THC interacts with your brain.

What about overdosing?

There are many dosage recommendations for CBD depending on its use. But after much research up to 1500 mg CBD per day is said to be safe. This amounts to a whole bottle of CBD oil. So, even if someone accidentally ingests high amounts of CBD it is received fairly well by the body and while it still may not produce any high it can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and drowsiness. So overdosing on CBD is not going to give you psychoactive effects rather a bad stomach cramp.

Is CBD legal?

As discussed before, the CBD being used in essential oils and other products is a derivative of the hemp plant. The hemp plant is naturally high in CBD content as compared to THC. Cultivation of hemp plants is legal in many countries all around the world but the rules and regulations are very strict. The legalization of CBD oil is governed by state law. As long as it contains THC in trace amounts (0.3%), it is allowed for sell.

Takeaway

CBD might be extracted from cannabis but it does not have the same high inducing properties as THC or marijuana. You will feel relaxed and calm after using CBD but it is not a psychoactive effect of the oil rather it relaxes your mind from stress.
